Is Tap Water Safe To Drink?
A recent article by the Telegraph newspaper uncovers the impact tap water could have on our long-term health.
Fertility problems, high cholesterol and Cancers are just a few of the long-term health implications that can arise from drinking tap water. There is now growing evidence that the water entering our homes is not as clean as it should be.
Hidden ‘forever chemicals’ are making their way into our water pipes. These chemicals are invisible to the eye but potentially very harmful to our bodies. We’ve briefly mentioned the forever chemicals in our other blog post “is filtered water better for you than tap water?” but what really are PFA’s and how can they affect our health?
Remember, we keep saying this but our bodies are made up of 80% water, so it’s important to know what we are consuming. The “clean” water taken from our taps is not as clean as it should be due to the lack of diligence from our water companies.
PFAS rates UK vs USA
The president of the united states of America Joe Biden has recently set out to reduce the acceptable levels of Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS). Also known as ‘forever chemicals’, the aim is to reduce to 4 nanograms per litre which is the lowest level that can be measured.
The current allowance for PFAS in the UK’s drinking water is 100 nanograms per litre which is 1, 25 times higher than America’s regulations. Experts are calling for the British government to action something similar which will reduce this figure. But at the moment the risk of long-term impacts on our health remains.
What impact can ‘forever chemicals’ can have on our health?
The article from The Telegraph states “that studies have now linked them to a broad range of health issues, ranging from reproductive problems to immune system suppression, increased cholesterol, kidney cancers and fertility problems, particularly in men.”
But what can we do about it?
